What trigger factors may start an attack of asthma?

A wide range of trigger factors may start an acute attack of asthma. They include:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Allergens in the environment
  • Active or passive smoking
  • Exercise, especially running
  • A sudden drop in environmental temperature (cold air)
  • Emotion (sadness, anger or excitement)
  • Irritants in the environment, e.g. paint fumes
