What are the complications of pharyngitis?

  • Tonsillitis
  • Spread of the infection to the middle ear or the lower respiratory tract (bronchitis, bronchiolitis or pneumonia)
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis may cause acute glomerulonephritis and acute rheumatic fever.

A Group A beta haemolytic Streptococcal infection of the pharynx is an important cause of acute glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever, especially in poor communities. The clinical diagnosis of a Streptococcal pharyngitis can be difficult without a bacterial culture.
