What are the signs of respiratory distress?

Respiratory distress is the clinical condition where the respiratory difficulty has become so severe that the child is likely to die unless given respiratory support (e.g. oxygen or ventilation).

  • Central cyanosis (or a low oxygen saturation)
  • Drowsiness, lethargy or unconsciousness
  • Restlessness
  • Apnoea
